Do you have a pet peeve thing in fics? I was reading a fic and it’s overall really good but there’s this one thing in there that I’ve seen in other fics too that I find genuinely kind of odd to the point it takes me out and that thing is the random old ajumma character that for some reason has a very intense maternal reaction/connection to the characters. Like they’ll go to a restaurant once and the ahuma will be like “my son” and throughout the story, the protagonist will go this ominous ajumma for advice??? Like??? Why does this old ajumma suddenly speak as if she was Aslan from narnia??? To fic writers I am begging stop with the sudden connection ajummas 😭 if you develop the reason why there’s a connection to make it make sense, I’ll take it but y’all (not you Alice) can’t be letting any old person become your number one mentor on sight just bc they’re old please I’m begging
i don’t like to talk about fic pet peeves publicly because i think it could be unkind 🩷
to answer your question generally: really the things that make personally DNF a fic (which i think may be a nicer way of putting it) is when the characterization is really off to me, or if the formatting — spacing, etc — makes it genuinely hard to read. my one grammar peeve that is not unique to fic, though it is more prevalent, is epithets (“the younger”, etc).
