Can I be honest? I’m actually getting a little scared about the reveals. I’ve been seeing so much AI witch-hunting on my timeline lately, with authors getting accused of using AI left and right, and it genuinely makes me anxious that the same thing could happen to me.
It’s gotten to the point where I’m second-guessing my own writing and even catching myself wanting to make certain sentences sound worse on purpose, just so they won’t come across as AI-generated. And I hate that. Writing is supposed to be something I enjoy, but now I find myself overthinking every little thing, and it’s honestly stressing me out so much.
How would you guys handle it if people started accusing the slickfest fics of being AI-written? Because I genuinely don’t know how I’d deal with that. I’m scared that no one is going to believe that I spent weeks working on this story and poured my entire heart and soul into it, just because someone might decide it sounds like AI. The thought of having all that time, effort, and love questioned or dismissed genuinely breaks my heart. I just hate what this whole AI situation has done to writing, especially when even genuinely good writing is starting to be treated as suspicious.
hi dear slickfester! we totally understand and empathize with what you’re going through, we hate what AI has done to writing as well. the slickmods understand both the importance of being vigilant about ai-generated fic and the discouragement that authors are experiencing as paranoia and baseless accusations increase throughout the fic community. please rest assured that we try our absolute best to find a balance between these two, but we are also still learning how to deal with ai as we go.
as for how we handle accusations:
for accusations with indisputable evidence (e.g., an ai prompt left in the text): the fic is removed from the collection and the author is formally banned from participating in slickfest again. at this time, we do not post any formal statements revealing the author.
for accusations with disputable evidence (e.g., a reader thinks a fic ‘sounds’ like ai): we may contact the author to discuss the issue with them further, however in these cases we do have to operate purely on a trust basis and take the author’s word for it. we also treat this as a proactive/protective “heads up” for the author to know that after author reveals, they may have readers who will want to take it up with them. (if you are concerned about this we recommend keeping your doc’s history/notes/beta chats/outlines/etc. unfortunately this is the best way to curb false accusations)
**anon ai accusations through alterspring that do not have indisputable evidence (e.g., “I’m pretty sure this fic sounds like it might be ai…?”) will not be responded to, posted, or acted upon as the anonymous nature of the accusation gives us no opportunity to discuss/follow up with the reader who has originally made the accusation.
harassment of any author, for any reason, is not accepted by the slickmod team. we may block twitter users who qrt reveal posts with baseless accusations or other harmful comments to prevent further negative interactions on our posts. please remember you also have the option to keep your fic on anonymous if this makes you feel more comfortable.
more information will be given on reveal etiquette in the coming weeks before reveals start! above all, we encourage everyone to please be respectful and considerate to everyone involved in slickfest. at the end of the day, we are all human, including those of us who make mistakes :-) thank you for your question!!
