so tired of people saying suguru calling people "monkeys" is related to buddhism and pointing out the fact that he's wearing a traditional buddhist robe as if people, especially BLACK poc are crazy for pointing out the racist undertones. he literally adopted the term from toji who saw himself as inferior as a result of his upbringing, it's meant to be self deprecating and suguru uses it to dehumanize non sorcerers. there's literally a scene where manami goes, "I can't believe we're the same species" after suguru kills that man. black poc were and still are referred to as monkeys and seen as primitive, subhuman beings by fucking racists! it's not crazy to see the correlation.
i agree. even if geto’s intent isn’t racist, monkey is still a loaded word and using it for a group of people you consider beneath you carries certain connotations regardless of intent. japanese people were called monkeys in american ww2 propaganda and east asians have used it against southeast asians in a racist way for a long time, so it’s not like this is some word without baggage in a japanese context either
