Thoughts on mike kelley?
On an instinctual level I like the idea of a big orb made of stuffed animals and I'm glad it exists but on an intellectual level I've found I grow more ambivalent toward art that feels like it could never exist outside of the ecosystem of Fine Art. There is much that that I enjoy that exists because of that ecosystem and in response to that ecosystem but, to me there is something about, any number of abstract expressionist paintings, where I could imagine it living through a variety of times and contexts, or a readymade where the essential emotion that provoked its being brought into the context of a museum already is being definitionally Out There In The World, but, it's hard to imagine Stuffed Animal Orb doing either of those things… it gives it a sort of sad pathos that I don't think is intentional. So maybe that means I like it? But not for the normal reasons.
