BRO ASKING ME ABOUT SITCOMS IS A DANGEROUS GAME…….. SORRY IN ADVANCE FOR THIS ESSAY.

my absolute favorite of all time was community, no competition. My ship that i was insane about before hyunibini was trobed. I also loved mythic quest, my Big Huge project before legoverse was a veryyy lore heavy community/mythic quest crossover fic that was super super super meticulous to canon.

My #2 fave of all time was new girl, and i love it for the same reasons i loved community—the characters are SO strong and super bizarre, the comedy gets absurdddd and unhinged but there’s still so much heart.

My main sitcom hot take is i Only like single-camera sitcoms. I dabbled in multi-cam but I rarely find them funny and single-cam is much better for the purpose of Writing Inspiration since its a lot tighter and ofc i don’t have a laugh track to rely on or an audience to play off of. Also the cinematic set up with closer framing really helps me bc 1) it lets me see the actors’ more subtle expressions, which helps me study them to describe in my writing and 2) it enables the actors to have a Grounded and Realistic performance rather than the more theatrical/exaggerated performances that come w multi-cam’s limited movement, which inspires my more Grounded and Realistic writing. The 4-sided sets make me feel more In The Room than the 3-sided stage set up, which i think helps me make my writing more immersive, like you’re with my characters instead of watching them from an audience.

as a single-camera lover my hottest take is probably that i do not like the office at all i dont think its funny even a little bit. Mythic quest is 10x more funny as a workplace sitcom imo… And this is a community lover specific hot take but i think season 4 is funny idgaf. It’s obv not up to par w 1 & 2 and i will admit that i think its funny HUGELY because i was already so invested in the characters but also I think the people who are constantly riding dan harmons dick exaggerate the difference.
