This is a good point, anon, and I’d like to add that the way I see it, and what I especially love about punishment spankings, is that when it’s a punishment, it’s always actually either non con or dub con, because even if the blorbo bares their bottom willingly, it’s because they’re operating within the frames of their circumstances or the circumstances of the world they live in. Which usually means that the lack of compliance will lead to a much harsher treatment, so they’re picking the lesser of the two evils.
And it’s precisely this lack of consent that makes the punishment appealing to me when I read or write it. Because when I’m reading or writing, it’s about my own pleasure, and not about the pleasure of the characters, and sometimes I just like it when they don’t have any

So it kinda depends on the setup and the story
But even when it’s not at all a punishment but something within a sexual play, I am of firm belief that it still should hurt. So regardless of whether it’s a punishment or a fun game that brings pleasure, it should hurt a lot in my opinion. I am not into some half-assed barely there smacks, no.
