hi!!
omg MANY! ok, there are some popular ones but some are more like... accent? idk at what point an accent becomes a dialect tbh hahaha but!!
- one that i get incredibly upset that i can't translate to english is acolher. this is a verb that would translate as a mix of welcoming and embracing -> to me it reflects that feeling of being seen and accepted regardless if the feeling is good or bad! so, when i tell someone how i feel, i yearn to be acolhida, whether they understand, relate or agree is irrelevant, what matters is that they hear, accept and embrace what i'm saying.
- there is the beloved saudade, oh my dearest feeling!! it's the happiness that it happened mixed with the sadness that it's gone. it's a feeling that would be,in english, "to miss" but it's a bit different. there is a tad of nostalgia associated to it, a kind of bitter-sweetness. i like that it's not something you feel but rather it is a feeling idk if that makes sense? like... hm. in portuguese we have two verbs to be, one for things that ARE (more like a fact) and things that are (more like a moment kind of thing), so like, i am twenty nine - this will change. but i am brazilian - this won't change. in the case of saudade, to me, it falls in the facts category. it's a feeling, it's there, and even when you "mata saudade", it still exists in a part of yourself bc even if you are by someone you felt so much saudade towards, you are still in a different moment than the last time you met.
- uai. it means nothing, it means everything. if you know, you know, if you don't, you really don't. it's an anecdote we use where i'm from and it can literally mean anything depending on the inflection, context, etc. i use it all the time, my supervisor (from like SUPER far away) is learning how to distinguish my uais through text. i'm teaching him well.
- sextou! celebratory way of saying that it's friday. friday = sexta-feira. sextou = fridayed. what you say to celebrate. work sucks? who cares, it's friday. kind of like a TGIF thing? but make it a verb.
- i've used this one a few times already sdkfjsdjfs but borocoxo. it's when you are like... deflated? a bit bummed but not sad? just a little meh? i have the best stick on earth which is borocoxinha -borocoxo + coxinha. Coxinha is a snack, freaking delicious. And the sticker is a rainbow with borocoxinha written on it, with a tiny coxinha sat beneath it, with one single tear streaming down it's delicious face. incredible. 11/10
these are just a few!! if you are interested in portuguese, make sure to learn the brazilian version bc it's cooler :] (pls if a portuguese person finds this, this is my opinion and just a lighthearted comment)
