Does heated rivalry make you proud to be Canadian ?
HR's success really excites me about the future of the arts in canada, it's made real waves in shaping what our film, acting, and even writing industries might look like moving forward and there’s something very affirming about seeing a canadian production thrive without relying on a foundational US dollar to validate its worth. ive seen it renew hope for a lot of canadians in the arts to keep creating and believe that success and progress don’t have to be contingent on crossing the border--and on a personal level, it feels good to connect to a mainstream show culturally and to see myself reflected in that way. im happy and deeply privileged in many ways to be Canadian.... but the same time, i think national pride is much more complicated than the simple joy that a crave original can spark. im hesitant to celebrate canada uncritically outside of giggling over being "canada down", because canadian complacency--whether it’s pride in our “politeness” or now in having “the gay hockey show”--has always and continues to function as a convenient smoke screen to the deep systemic issues that canada has internally and globally, and i mean that on a socio-political level as well as on how our government chooses to fund the arts (which is what has made it so difficult for canadian productions to get off the ground for many years in the first place)
i hope this answers your q anon, sorry if you didnt it mean it that deep but that's just how it goes!
