personally, not much! i'm still a baby academic and i have a good life-work balance (i enjoy my hobbies too much), but his situation is def inspired by those around me. many of my closest friends are academics and clearly struggling with burnout and internal pressures. some specific situations, like the tenure thing and the private life concerns, are things my friends have been through. and the fact that he is a sociology of surveillance expert comes from my past experience being a teaching assistant for a sociology of surveillance course haha
