What is your opinion of Tchaikovsky?
I'd like to introduce you to a certain demographic of people who try to mirror your deep understanding of theatre and the fine arts. They often declare their admiration for the classics, and when pressed to name a composer, they quickly cite Tchaikovsky as the greatest.
Would you agree or disagree?
Ah, Tchaikovsky. A name so often pulled like a rabbit from a magician’s hat, the default emblem of refined taste by those who seldom listen past the first crescendo. While his ballets have their merits, they are palatable. Predictable.
Stravinsky, however, unsettles. There is violence in his rhythm. Precision in his chaos. He composes not to please, but to provoke. Now that, to me, is music.
If these individuals are truly musically inclined, as they so often claim to be, they ought to listen to 'The Rite of Spring'. It puts 'Swan Lake' to shame.
