tea, can i vent to you a little? i hope that’s okay. i’ve been feeling really sad lately.
i’ve become a huge fan of something, let’s just call it X, but it turns out my heart just can’t handle reading all the hateful comments people make about X. so X has a rival, let’s call them Z, and the rival’s fans can be really nasty with the things they say. and one of my mutuals turned out to be one of those people who says awful things about X, too.
we’re not close friends or anything, we just follow each other and interact once in a while. one time, i posted something RELATED to X, and they replied to it, so i responded nicely. but then, out of nowhere, they completely went off-topic and started trashing X.
honestly, i didn’t really care at first. then they changed their whole layout to Z, and i genuinely had no problem with that. it wasn’t until they suddenly started tweeting about how they changed their layout and how they only wanted to hate on my X that it started bothering me. the timing was just way too coincidental.
because before they found out i liked X, they never really tweeted about hating X this much. and then i saw one of their mutuals replying to their post, asking, “since when are you a Z fan?” which made the whole thing feel even weirder to me.
now i feel so drained whenever they show up on my tl because all they ever seem to post is hate toward X. if you were in my position, what do you think you’d do, tea?
i’m sorry this is so random. i just wanted to get this off my chest, but i wasn’t sure who i could talk to about it. and btw, i really love seeing you interact with and respond to all kinds of things, tea!
Oh, Teacup, I’m sorry you had to go through that. Be that as it may, thank you for trusting me with your thoughts, especially when they might not have been easy to put into words. If there’s one thing I hope you recognise in yourself, it’s the kindness it takes to stop and reflect before letting resentment take the wheel. You could have met their actions with the same energy, yet here you are, giving the situation a second thought instead. That says something about the person you choose to be, even when someone else hasn’t treated you with the same consideration. Am I right?
Also… if you’ve said yourself that the two of you aren’t particularly close, must this person really be given so much space in your mind? Maybe that energy could be spent on something that brings you joy instead? Like stanning X to your heart’s content. Let their actions remain theirs, and give yourself permission to enjoy the things that make you happy. Not every unpleasant encounter deserves a place in your day, anyway.
If you were to ask me what I would do in your place, I’d probably choose to walk away. Maybe that says more about my tendency to close doors than anything else, but it is the most honest answer I can give you. Still, I don’t think you need to turn your leaving into a declaration or sever the connection in one fell swoop. Sometimes, you can take a step back, stop offering the same access to yourself, and let the distance grow until it feels natural. You can choose yourself without making an enemy of someone else. And when the time comes to go, you can do so without hatred, knowing that not everyone who hurts you needs to become someone you despise.
For now, though, how about giving your attention to something that makes your heart happier? Go stan X, enjoy your favourite things, and let yourself have a good time without allowing this situation to take up bigger room than it deserves. You don’t need solve every unpleasant feeling today, dear. I’ll keep you in my prayers, Teacup, and I hope that, in time, peace finds you in the places you least expect! 🤍
