When I read the first sentence of your question, I find myself thinking that maybe there’s nothing I would change at all. I don’t think every mistake needs to be justified by the good that came after it, but I also don’t think I can separate the person I am today from the things I wish I had done differently. So if I could go back, perhaps I would. But if I could only change one thing, I think I’d rather leave the past as it is and learn to make peace with it instead.
There are regrets, certainly, but ‘what if’ has never felt like a place I wanted to live in anymore. I spent enough years sitting with the past to realise that wondering what could’ve been won’t change what comes next. So these days, I’d rather take whatever is left in my hands and see what I can make of it. That’s the only formula I’ve found: stop looking behind me, step forward, and give my own future something to become. And for that, I’d say thank you for asking, dear
