apr. 23 '26 ā 1 week! (see note)
hello all. I have news!
It is time for some Philosophy 101 Nonsense!
Do you see yourself as ever-changing? Whether you do or not, do you like the way you view yourself in this regard?
Heraclitus famously says "you cannot step twice into the same river". Meaning, as one could assume, the River is ever-changing, and life is about flow, and change.
Although, in reality, this is Plato's quoting. What Heraclitus actually saidā"On those stepping into rivers staying the same other and other waters flow."ācarries a bit of a different meaning.
Plato had said Heraclitus claims "all things change, and nothing stays". This adds up, reading Plato's misquote of his, but not so much with Heraclitus' actual word.
The point is clearer. It is not that all changes and nothing stays, but that the change of the "waters flow" is what keeps the river "staying the same". The river you step into is changing, yes, but it is in its nature, for it would not be a river without the changing water.
At least this is what I believe. Now, if you cared to read all of that, in addition to the original question, I ask: which way do you prefer thinking about it? (the world, or identity?) Would you prefer to think of the universal flux, all changing, or in the familiarity of change?
Note: It's been one week since i started asking stuff again. I'm not too big on milestones, but i figured a bit of self indulging is FINE. after all, um...who cares!
I'm pretty half and half, I think it can be stressful when everything you are and around you is rapidly changing, and there isn't much consistency..but I really do wish to view more of it as a positive because there's beauty to embracing adaptation within change if that makes sense
I'm okay with myself changing to a certain extent, but somewhat I would like to keep some parts of myself the same due to both comfort & familiarity
Awhh well can I be both? I really like the idea of being both because I think both are true. I know a lot of people don't like answers like that and think of them as shallow or, uhmm, defeatist maybe? I'm looking for a different word here, but anyways, I think that overall we, every living being, and even beyond, are ever changing. In an objective way and a more philosophical way, y'know, but we also stay the same in the fact that we are always who we are, and who we are is the whole that is all of those changes. I think that is beautiful way of thinking and that makes me appreciate life a lot ā the act of change.
If we don't change then we'll never grow, so we must change because it is in our nature to grow ā or, well, I think it should be. UHmm, so, yes. Personally I am ever-changing. I know this to be true because I have an endless desire to learn and understand everything I can, and with that, change in myself will obviously follow.
So yeah, change in everyone and everything is important to me or whatever
every moment i become less like the person i was the moment before, even in minute ways. everything will always change
Ohhh I Do Enjoy these. Iām going to Say Iām ever-changing But Like I said Prior, I Am Open To Change. Change to me is fine, change for me means improvement. I Like Improvement. Obviously not all Change is good but I am not focusing on that
Also Familiarity of Change. Happy Questionversary
i love philosophy nonsense yay!
i do see myself as ever-changing, in fact im changing right now as i type this. the new stimuli, feelings, senses i experience in real-time adds up to the changes im experiencing within me all the time, i like to think. ohh this reminds me of the small discussion i had with someone else today !! it was also about change; more-so about how a character could develop within the stone prison theyre encased in, when they have no real stimuli except the feelings of others around him.. ok whatever it doesnt rlly matter right nyeow
i like to change certain aspects of myself as i engage with media, because exploring different options is fun! although, it does make me feel as though there isnt a real me sometimes. like, a real me that stays the same, that has real opinions that dont change so easily. but most of the time i think thats folly, because what are humans if not ever-changing and inquisitive amirite???
I think Heraclitus has also once said āDay by day, what you do is what you become.ā why you change can be explained by this too perchance. all the new and old things you experience throughout your days makes you different from the person you were before it all. he also has a funny name
and yeah, i agree with your take on the quote a lot! the river stays the same because of the constant change, not despite it :> but i think your ātrueā essence would not change much along with the rest of you, because its just in your nature. and you cant really get rid of that, i dont think.. unless you have an unreasonably long lifespan and can overcome your generational instincts, that is. the quote itself is really obscure, as is most of his sayings; maybe because nearly all of his work was lost and only short scraps were left for preservation.. shucks! but it does give you room for subjectivity :]
congrats on the milestone ! really kewlā¼ļø
gosh i cant tell if this is sound or not its nearing 1am and imm gonna go too sleep zzzz
I had to redo this answer because I got a bit too rambly and it disrupted my train of thought #OopsieDaisy. I'm not even sure if this is coherent.
So I can (sort of) get back on track, the short answer is: Yeah, I think I am ever-changing and we all are, and even our Universe. Change is the one single constant that doesn't change and I like that paradox. I also like that this question is also a bit related to the last one #Nice.
This question also reminded me of the song "Everything Stays" from Adventure Time. Some of the lyrics go like: "Everything stays right where you left it // Everything stays but it still changes // Ever so slightly // Daily and nightly // In little ways where(?) everything stays". Pardon me if the lyrics are a bit wrong. The show itself has a lot of things related to change, in my opinion, as well as eras that the main characters would never truly get to know.
The world is made up of memories, well to me. I mean, the stars in the night sky can just be the light of a star miles away that has already died. Is that not witnessing a memory? And new memories get made, from nothingness that turn into something(?)ness(?). The world is made up of little nothings that are structured together to become something and I think memories work that way too.
These nothings shift and move, changing structures, or even the nothingness itself changes and thus the structure changes (even if it's a tiny bit of nothing). I like the words you can combine to talk about change, or describe the Universe. I like to think that people are like Universes themselves, just miniature versions. Wow this is Long. Did I even make a point? I actually can't tell, my head got jumbled up. It happens, #Don'tWorry.
I'll stop it here. š
Well all people are changing. It can due to many factors. Yes I understand that I can change it can be fast or it can be slow. I'm ok with me changing because that's ok. Everything changes if you ask me and two of these things work together. World changes because people change.
I don't mind philosophy questions. They sometimes make my head spin but I like it!
yeah and i think everyone's ever-changing as well in all the little ways we get influenced by the world we are part of. i like that it's the way it is for the chance of growth, and experiencing a variety of things. i guess when it comes to the second one i believe that it's both in the world and human identity's nature to change over time, but it will always still be that world and that person. even if it takes a form vastly different from what it used to be, it's still existing to be what it's made to be; something that's ever-changing (?) if i understood that right
