i always love a good building, but lately it’s been an especially particular rabbit hole of artists who are interested in architecture !! gregory crewdson has been a big one. technically a photographer, but every image feels like a horror film that’s been paused halfway through. he has these like. meticulously staged (?) suburban scenes. where it feels like something has either just happened or is just about to. liminal is a popular word these days when it comes to spaces but i think crewdson is more like… winter snow. not so much liminality as ephemerality. there’s a difference in terms of the quality of permanence.

also also there was this exhibit in tokyo called 1999: memories of a day that doesn’t exist that i’m soooo gutted to have missed. if you can find videos/photos online… join me in mourning.)

i’ve also been revisiting rachel whiteread… i love that so much of her work is about casting absence. making sculptures out of the empty space inside rooms or around furniture, etc. there's something so quietly unsettling about treating negative space as the thing worth preserving. gah.

do ho suh is probably the mildest person on this list, but i adore the way he thinks about homes as things you carry with you. his translucent fabric houses feel like memories you can walk through. fun thoughts about tactility without the durability (?)… three little pigs core. something meta in it too coming from such a high profile nepo baby.

and then two artists i've discovered more about recently:

james casebere builds miniature architectural models and photographs them, so you're looking at buildings that never actually existed. they’re all empty institutional spaces, impossible corridors, flooded rooms... looooove

thomas demand recreates entire interiors out of paper before photographing them. i love that the final images look completely ordinary until you realize nothing in them is real in the ontological sense. it’s such an interesting way of thinking about memory, reconstruction, and place. also so spooky.
