no, it's not a small town thing, it has always been HUGE in cologne and you have to guess who gave it to you, but recentky people just do whatever and give it to their partner (that's not how that works)
sorry for responding so late i lowkey forgot i made this acc lol. i’m assuming you’re talking about the may 1st tree tradition thing. i’m not an expert on it or anything and ik it’s not necessarily a small town thing but it’s not popular everywhere in germany. it is popular where i grew up though and it has always been used to either confess or give it to your partner there. it just differs from region to region like most traditions do. i think it’s sweet either way :)
