i wish i could confidently promote my fic publicly like you. i get so shy and worry that people will tear me down for it.
Tbh I got the same shock when I joined this rpf space. 9 years of writing fanfic and this is the first fandom where people act like posting your own fic is a crime scene. Babe, it's fanfic, not a heist. I kept seeing tweets like "don't post links," "aren't you ashamed," "what if the drivers see it." please, what drivers?
I sure as hell know Lewis is not scrolling through my tiny account at 2am hunting for his name. The man has a podium to get on, he does not have time for my silly stories. But if he is, he can be my guest 😹 I mean I'll point him in the right direction.
So I did what any reasonable person would do. I surveyed the fandom and instead of using my main, I made a second account, and turned it into a gated little community. Think velvet rope, very strict bouncer, and the bouncer is me and I'm petty. I'm very picky about who I follow and who follows me. My carrd says nsfw/ rpf space, and if shipping/fic isn't for you, the door swings both ways. I built this corner for myself and I'm not letting a stranger walk in and rearrange my furniture—that's why my links are public.
So no, I'm not telling you to go promote loudly. But if you have a space you trust the way I currently trust mine, go for it. And never let anyone make you ashamed of writing fanfic. Writing is a gift, so write the filth, post the link, and if someone clutches their pearls, hand them a tissue and tell them to go find a hobby. Shame can stay in the DMs of people with nothing to write.
