What cultures, if any, inform your work as an artist?

no specific culture. i remember getting into a spirited argument with my then girlfriend as i did sketches of african masks during a museum visit. she found the practice appropriative. id like to think that my interest in whichever symbols have captured me at that time is explicitly super-cultural, or jungian or something. she disagreed, i think. that being said, whenever i visit a museum and find myself before a relief chiseled out of an indian or southeast asian palace, monastery or temple i try and imagine that same level of intricacy and symbolic intentionality spread across the scale of an entire religious structure and i feel completely crushed by that level of devotion and symbolic strength.
