Didi, I really admire you (as a friend)! You're smart, an avid reader, and a writer (you even work in that field now, which is awesome). How did you manage to build a career in that field? (Context: I want to switch my careers, but my major is psychology)
first of all, i appreciate such kind words from you and i want to admire you, too, for your curiosity. second of all, it is a long journey to be where i am right now
i have been writing since i was 13. i wrote many kinds of writing: short stories, articles, news, but i never tried to write poetry (maybe in the near future...?) all i can say is keep writing. find a class to help you meet a mentor, read as much as you need, let your friend become your peer reader
find a topic you are familiar with and write from it. since you are a psychology student, maybe you can write a character with the same major or a content related to your major. or if it's not about psychology, you can write about your hobbies! it can be movie review, the new album from your favorite singers, and many more
being a writer requires you to meet a lot of styles and topics to explore. take your time, sweetheart. i used to work as a teaching assistant and bury my dream as a writer, but this is the path i want. so i don't want to stop. you can do it in your own pace!
