At the beginning of the story, Callisto cared a lot about making Penelope love him. Everytime he did something nice for her, he'd ask her "so did you fall for me again"? That's why I was surprised when he later revealed that he was "afraid of the word love" and that he thought every relationship built up on it was doomed to fail. It seemed to contradict his early mindset🤔
He wasn't being serious at the time, he was saying that to mess with her as mild teasing because he wanted to test her and see what would be her reactions. You can read his thoughts in manhwa chapter 124/novel chapter 134.
Callisto is quite perceptive, he knew Penelope was intially scared of him so her love declaration made no sense but he still wanted to know why (he asked her in manhwa chapter 72 but he got distracted by Penelope's genuine compliment about his hair lol)
