do you believe jaemin is woke?
i honestly would hope so but do i know that? no i don’t. what i do believe is that we as fans have to be smart enough not to confuse admiration with idolatry. every conversation surrounding idols always circles back to the fact that we really do not know these people, and i don’t want this to become a “is popstar an ally? is this brand a feminist?” situation more than it already has because on one hand we have people confidently stating they’ve “out-woked” you by affirming all idols are bigots and that you are stupid if you believe otherwise and then the other polarizing minority (though still concerning amount of people) saying what you know who did wasn’t that big of a deal for many ignorant reasons but mainly because they refuse to accept or digest the concept of someone they’ve idolized potentially (and in my honest opinion, actively) being a piece of shit. and this is not exclusive to idols either, and i heavily dislike how these type of SERIOUS situations have become an “idol thing” used in fanwars as gotcha moments rather than for what they actually are… i mean have we forgotten people like armie hammer exist? everybody loved that guy back in 2017 and look at him now, but that is just an example of western celebrities. things are never strictly black and white; feelings are complex and i think we are allowed to believe the people we admire are not horrible human beings as long as we do not betray our own morals by staying if they have proved you wrong. racist and homophobes and misogynists and supremacists and whatever, they don’t stop with just one minority so, to whoever may be reading, trust me nostalgia is not gonna do anything for anyone when others are being threatened and exploited.
and wow holy crap this got too long, but yeah.
