Thoughts on the mystery dungeon game genre?

Overall the Mystery Dungeon series could be said to "kick ass". Of course we were big into the Pokemon subseries and played all the original releases when they came out and had a lot of fun both because they are simpler and have the permanent progression and are about turning into an animal and having gay ace besties. We've beaten the Shiren on the Wii and the Tower of Fate one on Vita, with the Wii one being a little bit in-between in terms of structure which is interesting.

In terms of roguelikes that are clearly inspired by Mystery Dungeon, we're a big booster of ZHP on PSP and we played one of the Touhou ones on steam at some point, beat it and then got stuck on postgame/side content somewhere along the lines.

So basically, and given how we've always enjoyed playing like, Nethack but never made any headway, I'd say we're at a precise level of interest that can do the main story of those games but not get really super into them right? The hardest bonus dungeons always feel impenetrable. It's hard to know what we're doing wrong or how to improve. That said we've seen Dot play through Shiren 1 a few times and are starting to gather some of the keys to success. Definitely gotta go back to that SNES Shiren at some point and give it another shot. We streamed it a bit and just kinda got distracted by other games but we definitely hadn't run out of desire to play it. Even if we never get good at them I don't think we'll ever lose the drive to try new ones.
